Post-bifurcation behaviour of elasto-capillary necking and bulging in soft tubes

چکیده
Previous linear bifurcation analyses have evidenced that an axially stretched soft cylindrical tube may develop infinite-wavelength (localized) instability when one or both of its lateral surfaces are under sufficient surface tension. Phase transition interpretations also highlighted the admits a final evolved ‘two-phase’ state. How localized initiates and evolves into state is still matter contention, this focus current study. Through weakly nonlinear analysis conducted for general material model, initial sub-critical solution found to be bulging necking depending on whether axial stretch greater less than certain threshold value. At value, exceptionally super-critical kink-wave arises in place localization. A thorough interpretation anticipated post-bifurcation behaviour based our theoretical results given, supported by finite-element method simulations.

Modeling of elasto-capillary phenomena.
Surface energy is an important factor in the deformation of fluids but is typically a minimal or negligible effect in solids. However, when a solid is soft and its characteristic dimension is small, forces due to surface energy can become important and induce significant elastic deformation. The interplay between surface energy and elasticity can lead to interesting elasto-capillary phenomena. ...
متن کاملEffects of imperfections on localized bulging in inflated membrane tubes.
The problem of localized bulging in inflated membrane tubes shares the same features with a variety of other localization problems such as formation of kink bands in fibre-reinforced composites and layered structures. This type of localization is known to be very sensitive to imperfections, but the precise nature of such sensitivity has not so far been quantified. In this paper, we study effect...

We analyse two-dimensional clamped parallel elastic sheets which are partially immersed in liquid as a model for elasto-capillary coalescence. In the existing literature this problem is studied via minimal energy analysis of capillary and elastic energies of the post-coalescence state, yielding the maximal stable post-coalescence bundle size. Utilizing modal stability analysis and asymptotic an...

The progressive break-up of an initially stable fluid column or thread into a number of smaller droplets is an important dynamical process that impacts many commercial operations from spraying and atomization of fertilizers and pesticides, to paint application, roll-coating of adhesives and food processing operations such as containerand bottle-filling. The progressive thinning of a fluid filam...
متن کاملComputational modeling of electro-elasto-capillary phenomena in dielectric elastomers
We present a new finite deformation, dynamic finite element model that incorporates surface tension to capture elastocapillary effects on the electromechanical deformation of dielectric elastomers. We demonstrate the significant effect that surface tension can have on the deformation of dielectric elastomers through three numerical examples: (1) surface tension effects on the deformation of sin...
